Introduction to 3D Printing- Materials and their Myths
Hey Folks welcome back for another post of our Micro blogging series .
We just left you the last time in pondering about various, types of medium that can be 3D Printed , this time we are getting into more detail.
We already know that , 3D printing is more about printing with a consumable more like a 2D Printer, but the big difference is we move along the z axis, and produce the replica in a 3D space. So this kindles a thought, what might be the types of material with which we can 3D Print, as we have already seen that content can be 2D Printed on a sheet of paper. And here the consumable is the INK and the medium is PAPER , mostly.

So, we know that the type of , consumable in a desktop printer will be in the form a LIQUID- Inkjet or POWDER- Laser printer. and everything is deposited on to a medium like a Paper.
Fast Forward to 3D Printing!
Similar lines we can introduce into 3D Printing, keep in mind we need a MATERIAL and a medium to DEPOSIT. As simple as that , this has given many ways, with the advent of technology and this has given rise to many forms of 3D Printing! Lets Discuss the three most common ones in the simplest Possible terms for every reader to understand. So, let's go!
Process Name :
Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF)
Filament Deposition Manufacturing (FDM)

Consumable : Thermo plastic - Bio degradable or Non Bio-Degradable
Form Factor : Available in shape of filaments -Wires 1.75/2.85 mm
Printing Medium : Heated bed with Glass or Special Print Surface.
Typical Materials : PLA, ABS, PET-G, TPU
Machine name : FDM 3D Printer
Popular models : Stratasys, Roboze, Markforged
Process Name :
Stereolithography Apparatus (SLA)

Consumable : Thermo plastic - Bio degradable or Non Bio-Degradable
Form Factor : Available as Photopolymer resins
Printing Medium : VAT, resin Tub on a LCD screen with FEP sheet
Typical Materials : High temperature Resin, Tough Resin, Castable resin
Machine name : SLA 3D Printer
Popular models : Formlabs , Envision tech, 3D Systems, Elegoo mars
Process Name :
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

Consumable : Thermo plastic - Bio degradable or Non Bio-Degradable
Form Factor : Available as Powders
Printing Medium : Powder bed platform
Typical Materials : Nylon
Machine name : SLS 3D Printer
Popular models : HP-MJF, EOS-SLS
So in a nutshell we have three forms of consumables- FILAMENT, RESIN AND POWDER when it comes to Plastics!
In the next post we will get into the best filaments for DIY, Makers and industries.
Have a great week ahead.
